Let’s start with the obvious. I live in Bergen, the city that invented weather as a full-contact sport. Seven months of sideways rain a year will make any man philosophical. Forty-eight hits different when the only thing creaking louder than the old wooden houses on Bryggen is your own spine and knees.

Forty-eight and freaking out in bergen

The money anxiety thing snuck up on me like an unexpected audit. I used to think “financial planning” was something you did right after you bought your first house and before you had kids. Turns out it’s something you panic about at 2 a.m. while calculating how many more years I have to keep pretending I understand cryptocurrency. The monthly mortgage is paid, the kids are (mostly) launched, and yet here I am, refreshing my banking app like it’s going to spit out a winning lottery ticket instead of the same sad truth: I should probably stop buying those overpriced cinnamon buns at the bakery by the fish market. They’re basically edible rent.

Then there’s the health angle. My body has decided to throw a surprise party and I wasn’t invited. Little things -like the fact that my “dad bod” has officially upgraded to “senior consultant bod” -started adding up. So yesterday I did the responsible adult thing: I booked a doctor’s appointment. Not because I’m dying (I hope), but because the phrase “kontroll av vitale verdier” suddenly sounded like the title of a very serious Scandinavian crime novel. I’m picturing the doctor looking at my chart, raising one eyebrow, and saying, “Well, your cholesterol is Norwegian, but your blood pressure is definitely speaking Bergen dialect -loud and a little stressed.”

Embracing the Changes with Humor

I’m trying to laugh about it, because what else can you do? Workout is already on my agenda, and I’ve swapped late-night cheese plates for… okay, smaller late-night cheese plates. Baby steps. The fjords are still out there looking gorgeous, the mountains haven’t moved, and the city is still the most beautiful rain-soaked postcard on the planet. I just need to stop treating my body like it’s a 1998 Volvo that can run forever on bad fuel and optimism.

So yeah. Forty-eight in Bergen. Midlife crisis in full swing, and a doctor’s appointment on the calendar like a gentle nudge from the universe saying, “Hey, buddy, time to stop winging it.”

If you’re out there somewhere between 40 and 50, staring at your own reflection and wondering when “young and reckless” turned into “middle-aged and checking labels for sodium”, you’re not alone. We’re all just out here trying to figure out how to keep the engine running without trading it in for a newer model.
Wish me luck at the doctor’s. I’ll let you know if the vital values come back with a Bergen accent or a warning label.
Until then, stay dry, stay curious, and maybe skip that second cinnamon bun.
Cheers from the rain capital of Norway, going out for a walk to the fish market.
