After living in Bergen for 22 years, I’ve learned that if you want to get the most out of the city, you should come here in April or May.

That’s when Bergen is at its best. The sun shines more often, the air feels warm (yes, 16–18°C is warm here), and the whole city becomes more lovable. I still remember a lovely afternoon last May when I was sitting on a bench at Bryggen with a coffee in hand. I had my jacket open and thought, “My goodness, this is almost too good to be Bergen.”

Locals have a running joke: as soon as school breaks for summer vacation in June, the rainy season really kicks in. It’s almost as if the weather gods coordinate with the school calendar. The kids get out, and then the heavens open. Classic Bergen timing.
I’ve experienced both. I’ve hosted friends in July who stood staring gloomily out over Vågen while it poured, and I’ve had guests in May who went home saying, “I suddenly understand why you live here.”

If you’re thinking of visiting Bergen, my one tip is to come in April or May.
Then, you’ll experience the city the way I love it. You can eat ice cream at Fisketorget without freezing your fingers off, ride the Fløibanen without getting blown away by wind and rain, and walk through the green areas without getting soaked. The bonus is that it’s not quite tourist season yet.

I can’t promise sunshine every day—this is Bergen, after all. But you’re much more likely to experience those beautiful, bright days that help us Bergensers get through the rest of the year.

So come early! Enjoy the city while it’s in a good mood.
If it does start to rain, well, at least you’ll have experienced the best version first.

Welcome! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the weather will be on our side when you arrive.
